I have the identical order of preference in my mind as well. Nice summary. Women's clothing is nothing short of an exercise in futility.

Sounds like an interesting story! And people love to read true stories. You might want to try Arizona publishers, since your topic may interest a regional audience. Best of luck!

You just about have me convinced that I should go with an Indie publisher. Looking at agent's websites, it seems either your name has to be a household word, or you must have received a Pulitzer for one of your works.

How do you get published, if you haven't been published before? It's a Catch-22 situation.

I have written a manuscript about two of my great-grandfathers, best friends who came from Denmark with nothing, and who were pioneers in Arizona. One owned two saloons and was elected Constable of Tucson for many years, the other raised prize-winning fruit, had many mining claims and had 5 places named after him.

The daughter of one, married the son of the other. It's an interesting and absolutely true story. Real life, and real history.

I have documentation on everything. I want to get their story published. Arizona history currently available is very sketchy, especially before statehood in 1912; this fills in a lot of the gaps, and puts some things in perspective. It spans the years of 1872-1930/1947.

Any suggestions?

I absolutely loved what you had to say about agents, i.e., not going after one. I was on the proverbial fence as to whether to go (attempt anyway) the TP route or SP. Like you, I have now come to the realization that I don't need the hassle, the never-ending waiting game, the rejections or, better yet, the lack of any response, etc. At this point in my life I don't really care if I sell ten thousand novels or one. My writings have never been about money or fame. I will be only beholden to me.

I don't think that many writers today can make a living solely from writing. In the future this trend will continue. The stereotype of the starving artist exists because it's largely true. I always comfort myself with the reminder that Chaucer had a day job, too.

Peter,

All the benefits that you indicated have obvious value, but the remaining question is how will we earn a living from our livelihood if our audiences get accustomed to free books?
